Waaree Energies Limited has announced plans to establish India’s largest integrated solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The project, with an investment of approximately ₹6,200 crore, marks a major step toward strengthening India’s domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem and reducing reliance on imports.
The facility will be developed at Butibori in Nagpur and will be spread across nearly 300 acres. Once operational, the plant will have a manufacturing capacity of 10 gigawatts each for solar ingots and wafers, making it the largest integrated complex of its kind in India.
The announcement was made during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by senior government leaders and industry representatives, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s upstream solar supply chain, which forms the foundation of the solar photovoltaic manufacturing value chain.
Solar ingots and wafers are critical raw materials used in the production of solar cells and modules. By developing domestic manufacturing capabilities for these components, the project aims to reduce dependence on imported materials and improve supply chain resilience for India’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
Waaree Energies Chairman and Managing Director Hitesh Doshi stated that the facility represents a significant step toward strengthening India’s clean energy manufacturing capacity. He said the project aligns with the country’s broader vision of building a self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem while supporting the national goal of expanding renewable energy deployment.
According to the company, the Nagpur facility will also contribute to regional economic development. The project is expected to create more than 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, supporting skill development, industrial growth, and local economic activity in Maharashtra.
India is currently one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally, supported by government policies focused on increasing domestic manufacturing and improving energy security. The development of integrated manufacturing facilities for key solar components is considered an important step in achieving long-term clean energy and sustainability goals.
