Bharat Forge Limited, in collaboration with the Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has flagged off the Vikram VT 21, a new generation advanced armoured platform. The project represents a joint effort involving Bharat Forge, Tata Advanced Systems Limited, and multiple MSMEs.

The Vikram VT 21 programme comprises two variants: the Advanced Armoured Platform Wheeled (AAP-Wh) and the Advanced Armoured Platform Tracked (AAP-Tr). Both platforms have been co-developed to meet the evolving operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.

According to the company’s press release, the platform was developed from concept to combat-ready stage in under three years through continuous collaboration and integrated engineering efforts.

Senior defence officials and industry representatives attended the flag-off event, including DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat. He highlighted the success of the Development Cum Production Partner model, which combines DRDO’s research capabilities with industry-scale manufacturing and execution.

Bharat Forge Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director Amit Kalyani stated that the Vikram VT 21 integrates a ruggedised vehicle chassis with an unmanned turret, showcasing advanced systems engineering capabilities.

The platform has successfully cleared the Technical Evaluation Committee for the Wheeled Armoured Fighting Vehicle (WH-AFV) and Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programs of the Ministry of Defence. This milestone positions the system for potential induction into the Indian Armed Forces and export markets.

Bharat Forge, along with its defence subsidiary Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), reiterated its commitment to strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing. The company aims to expand its in-house design and technology capabilities in alignment with future military requirements and the broader vision of self-reliance in defence production.
