Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 190.5 MW solar Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The project has been developed under the SJVN Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) Tranche-1 initiative and forms part of a larger 460 MW FDRE project.
The commissioned project is designed to combine large-scale solar power generation with energy storage and grid-support technologies. It includes a 115 MWh advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), aimed at supporting grid reliability and enabling more consistent renewable power delivery.
The project will supply electricity to Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and North Power Company Limited (NPCL) discoms. The integration of solar generation with storage is expected to improve the project’s ability to provide firm and dispatchable renewable energy.
According to TPREL, the project was executed amid compressed timelines and supply-chain challenges affecting the availability of transmission-line materials, module mounting structures and other critical equipment. The company said it adopted technologies including BESS, Harmonic Filter Banks and Static Var Generator systems during execution.
Among the project’s execution milestones, the switchyard was completed within three months, while the Harmonic Filter Bank was completed within one month. These facilities form part of the project’s grid-integration and power-quality infrastructure.
With the commissioning of the project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.4 GW. Around 6.9 GW is currently operational, including 5.6 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity. Another 5.5 GW is under various stages of implementation and is expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 24 months.
The Rajasthan project adds to Tata Power’s renewable energy portfolio as the company continues to expand its clean-energy capacity. Tata Power has set a target of developing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with renewable generation and energy storage expected to play a significant role in its expansion strategy.
The commissioning of the 190.5 MW FDRE project also highlights the growing role of hybrid renewable-energy projects that combine solar generation with battery storage to address intermittency and provide more predictable electricity supply to the grid.
