Full Article: Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL), a joint venture between Bajaj Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, has announced plans to set up a greenfield integrated steel plant in Kanakapura, Koppal, Karnataka. The project, involving an investment of ₹2,345 crore, is expected to raise the company’s annual production capacity to 700,000 tonnes.

The expansion will support India’s rising demand for high-quality special steel across sectors such as automotive, railways, and energy. MSSSL, which currently produces about 350,000 tonnes annually, will add advanced technologies including a jumbo bloom caster, modern rolling lines, and upgraded testing facilities to improve quality and efficiency.

According to Vipul Mashruwala, President of MSSSL, the project represents a major step in the company’s growth strategy and aligns with national objectives of self-reliance. He highlighted that the plant is designed with sustainability at its core, targeting net-zero steel production by 2050. Over 95% of its energy requirements will be met from renewable sources, with future phases planned to integrate hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technologies.

The facility, expected to begin operations by early 2028, will include iron making, steel making, and blooming mill units. The company aims to position itself as a key supplier of low-emission, high-performance steel, strengthening its role in both domestic and international markets.
