Kerala-based tyre and treads manufacturer Tolins Tyres Ltd has announced the groundbreaking of a new Reclaim Rubber manufacturing facility in Palakkad through its 100% wholly owned subsidiary, Terra Rubber Private Limited. The facility is aimed at expanding the company’s presence across the rubber value chain while increasing the use of recycled raw materials.
The proposed facility will process scrap tyres and other rubber waste, including rubber compound waste, as key raw materials for manufacturing Reclaimed Rubber. Through a controlled devulcanisation process, the facility will recover usable rubber from waste materials and convert it into Reclaimed Rubber that can be incorporated into suitable rubber compounds, depending on product specifications and performance requirements.
The project is expected to strengthen Tolins Tyres’ backward integration strategy by allowing the group to participate further upstream in the rubber value chain. By converting end-of-life tyres and rubber waste into value-added raw materials, the facility could help improve material efficiency while reducing reliance on virgin rubber resources.
The Terra Rubber facility will follow a process involving scrap tyres and rubber waste, devulcanisation and conversion into Reclaimed Rubber for reuse in rubber applications. This is expected to create an additional raw-material stream for Tolins Tyres while supporting resource recovery and reducing the amount of rubber waste sent for disposal.
The project could also provide Terra Rubber with an opportunity to participate in India’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework for waste tyres. Under the applicable Central Pollution Control Board framework, registered recyclers can generate EPR certificates against eligible quantities of tyres recycled and corresponding eligible recycled products, including Reclaimed Rubber.
Subject to the required CPCB registration, certification and regulatory requirements, Terra Rubber could generate and transfer EPR certificates to tyre producers seeking to meet their EPR obligations. This could provide the company with an additional potential revenue stream alongside the sale of Reclaimed Rubber.
The facility therefore combines two potential value streams by recovering usable raw materials from rubber waste while creating an opportunity to participate in the EPR ecosystem. The initiative is also aligned with the broader shift toward resource recovery, waste diversion and circular manufacturing practices.
Tolins Tyres said the Terra Rubber project represents a step toward building a more integrated rubber ecosystem by converting end-of-life tyres and rubber waste into materials that can be brought back into productive use. The company expects the facility to strengthen its participation across the rubber value chain while supporting material efficiency and recycling.
