Eveready Industries India Limited has commissioned India’s only operating alkaline battery manufacturing facility in Jammu, marking a significant step in strengthening domestic production capabilities in the energy solutions segment. The facility, located in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, has been developed as a greenfield project with an investment of approximately ₹200 crore.
The inauguration was carried out by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, in the presence of senior company leadership. The plant aligns with the Government’s Make in India initiative and is expected to enhance the country’s self-reliance in battery manufacturing.
Capacity expansion to meet rising demand
The newly operational plant has an annual installed capacity of around 456 million alkaline batteries, with a peak production capacity of approximately 360 million units. This expansion comes at a time when demand for high-performance alkaline batteries is rising, driven by increased usage of power-intensive electronic devices.
The company stated that the facility will help reduce dependence on imports while improving manufacturing efficiency and enabling scalability. It is also expected to support Eveready’s expansion in both domestic and international markets through private labelling and exports.
Economic impact and employment generation
The project is expected to generate over 500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. It is also anticipated to contribute to local economic development by boosting ancillary industries and improving supply chain infrastructure.
Officials highlighted that the facility will play a role in promoting inclusive growth by creating opportunities for youth and supporting regional industrialisation.
