Key Highlights

  • Tata Power signs an MoU with BPCL to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for the Mumbai Refinery project.
  • The proposed infrastructure will meet the 90 MW power requirement of BPCL’s PRFCCU project.
  • BPCL’s PRFCCU project has a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).
  • The refinery project has an estimated investment of ₹14,203 crore.
  • Tata Power and BPCL plan to invest a combined ₹250 crore in power infrastructure development.
  • The infrastructure development is expected to be completed in approximately 24 months, subject to approvals and project milestones.
  • Tata Power plans to strengthen its Trombay transmission network to support industrial electricity demand.
  • Tata Power also plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years.

Tata Power Company Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery. The proposed infrastructure will cater to the project’s power requirement of 90 MW, according to Tata Power’s announcement dated October 27, 2026.

BPCL’s PRFCCU project has a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated project cost of ₹14,203 crore. The project is aimed at increasing higher-value product recovery and supporting petrochemical diversification at the Mumbai Refinery. It is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under execution and the largest project undertaken at the Mumbai Refinery, according to the announcement.

Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure required to meet the refinery project’s electricity demand. The infrastructure development is expected to take approximately 24 months, subject to applicable approvals and project milestones.

The combined estimated investment by Tata Power and BPCL for the power infrastructure development is approximately ₹250 crore. The proposed investment will support the required power connectivity and transmission facilities for the refinery expansion.

Beyond supplying electricity to BPCL’s PRFCCU project, the initiative is expected to strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area of Mumbai. The upgraded infrastructure is intended to support anticipated electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other developments in the industrial zone.

Tata Power has also outlined plans to strengthen its transmission infrastructure at Trombay through the development of a 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years. The planned facility is expected to improve power evacuation capacity and support grid availability for Mumbai’s industrial and commercial consumers.

The collaboration forms part of the companies’ efforts to strengthen power infrastructure in Mumbai and support industrial energy requirements. For Tata Power, the project adds to its transmission and distribution infrastructure development activities, while BPCL’s PRFCCU project is intended to increase domestic value addition in the refining sector.
