Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited (SMEL) has announced the successful commissioning of its new 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) beneficiation plant at Sambalpur, Odisha. The company said the project has been developed with a capital investment of ₹150 crore and is aimed at upgrading low-grade iron ore into high-quality feedstock for downstream operations.
According to the company, the newly commissioned facility is expected to improve raw material utilisation, enhance operational efficiency, and support profitability by reducing dependence on externally sourced feedstock.
The beneficiation plant is now fully operational and processes low-grade iron ore into premium-grade material for use across the company’s manufacturing operations. Shyam Metalics stated that the facility will help maximise the utilisation of existing mineral resources while reducing waste generated during mining activities.
The company added that in-house processing of low-grade ore is expected to create cost efficiencies by lowering procurement requirements for external feedstock. The technology used at the plant is also designed to ensure consistent quality of raw materials supplied to downstream production units.
Commenting on the development, Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited, said the commissioning of the 1.5 MTPA beneficiation plant marks a key milestone for the company. He added that the ₹150 crore investment is expected to strengthen raw material value, reduce production costs, and support overall operational performance.
Shyam Metalics also highlighted the environmental aspects of the project, stating that the plant incorporates modern beneficiation technology designed to optimise water and energy consumption while minimising waste generation. The company said the facility enables the conversion of underutilised low-grade resources into higher-value inputs, supporting efficient resource management.
