Tata Power Signs MoU With DGPC To Support Bhutan’s 5,000 MW Clean Energy Expansion Through Skill Development

Tata Power and Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a skill development ecosystem aimed at supporting the development of 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity in Bhutan.

The agreement was signed in Thimphu and is designed to build a structured training framework to support workforce requirements linked to ongoing clean energy projects between the two organisations.

According to the company, the initiative will focus on developing a future-ready workforce capable of supporting operations and maintenance of large-scale clean energy assets. The training programmes will be conducted through the Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI).

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay. The agreement was formally signed by Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Dr Praveer Sinha and DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin.

Tata Power said it will provide technical expertise, training infrastructure, course material and accreditation support through TPSDI for implementation of the programmes. DGPC will facilitate mobilisation and deployment of trainees and coordinate with Bhutanese authorities for necessary approvals.

Dr Praveer Sinha said the partnership reflects a shared vision to strengthen Bhutan’s clean energy sector through workforce development and industry-ready training programmes focused on safety, emerging technologies and operations management.

Dasho Chhewang Rinzin stated that the initiative is intended to strengthen local capabilities required for the development of 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity and align with Bhutan’s workforce development objectives.

The skill development programme will be implemented in multiple phases. The first phase will focus on safety training and workforce readiness before site deployment. The second phase will cover technical training related to construction, material handling and earth-moving equipment operations. The third phase will focus on specialised skills required for long-term operations and maintenance of clean energy assets.

Tata Power said TPSDI currently provides industry-relevant training and certification programmes across the power sector, including renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and green hydrogen.

DGPC, a subsidiary of Druk Holding and Investments Limited, is Bhutan’s sole power generation utility. The company currently has a hydropower portfolio of 3,473 MW and plans to develop 15,000 MW of hydropower capacity and 5,000 MW of solar capacity over the next decade.
