Water technology company VA Tech WABAG Ltd has secured a major international desalination contract in Kuwait, marking the company’s entry into the country’s water infrastructure sector. The project has been classified as a “Mega” international order, indicating a contract value exceeding USD 150 million.
The company announced that it has won a Design, Build and Operate (DBO) contract for the Doha Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II from Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE).
According to the company, the project will be executed through an unincorporated joint venture led by WABAG in partnership with Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C. (HEISCO), Kuwait.
The scope of work includes the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 60 MIGD (approximately 272 MLD) SWRO desalination plant equipped with a recarbonation system. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase is scheduled for completion within 36 months, followed by a five-year Operations and Maintenance (O&M) period.
The desalination facility is expected to utilize advanced seawater desalination technologies to produce potable water and support Kuwait’s growing water demand. The project also incorporates solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to partially meet the plant’s energy requirements, aligning with sustainability and lower-carbon objectives.
WABAG stated that the order strengthens its presence in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and expands its portfolio of large-scale desalination projects. The company said the contract reinforces its position in the Middle East water infrastructure market and supports its strategy of delivering sustainable water management solutions.
Commenting on the development, Rohan Mittal, Head – Strategy and Business Growth (GCC), WABAG, said the project represents a significant milestone for the company as it enters Kuwait and expands its desalination footprint across the region.
The company noted that it operates across the water value chain, including design, engineering, construction, commissioning and long-term operations. WABAG also highlighted its focus on innovation, sustainability and water reuse technologies as part of its global business strategy.
