JSW Energy Limited has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement for a 1,600 MW thermal power project with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. The agreement has been executed through JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.
The project involves the development of a greenfield 1,600 MW power plant, comprising two units of 800 MW each, at Salboni in West Bengal. The plant is expected to be commissioned within six years. The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process conducted by the state power distribution utility.
With this agreement, JSW Energy’s total planned thermal capacity at Salboni has increased to 3,200 MW. The company had earlier signed a separate 1,600 MW Power Purchase Agreement for the same location, making Salboni the largest single-location thermal asset in its portfolio.
The Salboni project will be supplied with domestic coal under the SHAKTI B (iv) policy framework. The strategic location of the project near coal sources and synergies with the existing unit under construction are expected to improve operational efficiency and cost optimisation.
JSW Energy currently owns and operates 5,658 MW of thermal generation capacity. With 3,200 MW under construction at Salboni and a potential 1,800 MW expansion at the KSK Mahanadi project, the company’s total thermal capacity is projected to increase to around 10,658 MW, with all incremental capacity based on domestic coal.
On a consolidated basis, JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 32.1 GW. This includes 13.3 GW of operational capacity, 14 GW under construction across thermal and renewable segments, hydro assets under acquisition, and a development pipeline. The company has also secured energy storage capacity through pumped hydro storage projects and battery energy storage systems.
JSW Energy has set long-term targets to achieve 30 GW of power generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030, while working towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
