Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a contract worth ₹127 crore from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL), Bhutan, for civil construction works associated with the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project.
According to the company, the contract covers the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams. The project is expected to be completed within a period of nine months.
The award follows WHPL’s technical and financial evaluation process and adds to HCC’s portfolio of hydroelectric infrastructure projects. The diversion works are considered a critical component of the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project, helping facilitate the early commencement of the project’s primary civil construction activities and supporting the overall implementation schedule.
The contract comes at a time when Bhutan is expanding its hydropower sector under the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–2029). The government has set a target of achieving 6,000 MW of installed hydropower capacity through continued investments in large-scale hydroelectric projects.
HCC has maintained a presence in Bhutan’s hydropower sector for more than three decades and has been involved in several key projects across the country. These include the Tala Hydroelectric Project (1,020 MW), Kurichu Hydroelectric Project (60 MW), Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project (1,200 MW), Dagachhu Hydropower Project (114 MW) and Nikachhu Hydropower Project (118 MW).
The company stated that its execution of these projects has contributed significantly to Bhutan’s hydropower generation capacity. HCC also noted that it has executed projects accounting for approximately 26% of India’s installed hydropower capacity.
Hindustan Construction Company is engaged in the development and construction of infrastructure projects across transportation, power and water sectors. Over the years, the company has executed a range of large-scale engineering projects including hydropower facilities, nuclear power infrastructure, expressways, highways, tunnels and bridges.
