VA Tech WABAG Ltd has secured a Letter of Award from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board for a major water recycling project in Chennai. The contract involves the refurbishment, financing, operation, maintenance, and transfer of a 45 million litres per day Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis plant located at Kodungaiyur.
The project will be executed under the Public Private Partnership model and focuses on restoring the facility to its full treatment capacity. The TTRO plant, originally developed in 2019, supplies high quality treated wastewater to industries located in the Manali–Ennore and Manali–Minjur industrial corridors.
Under the agreement, WABAG will undertake the refurbishment and upgrade of the existing plant to bring it back to its designed capacity of 45 MLD. The company aims to complete the refurbishment phase within 18 months.
Following the completion of the upgrade, WABAG will operate and maintain the facility for a period of 18.5 years. During this phase, the company will ensure consistent supply of treated water that meets the required quality and quantity standards specified in the agreement.
The Kodungaiyur project further strengthens WABAG’s footprint in advanced wastewater recycling and reuse solutions. The company already operates a similar 45 MLD TTRO plant at Koyambedu in Chennai, which was designed, built, and commissioned by WABAG in 2019 to supply recycled water to industrial consumers.
In addition to its presence in Chennai, WABAG is also operating a 40 MLD TTRO facility in Ghaziabad. The Ghaziabad plant supplies treated wastewater to industries in the Sahibabad industrial area and was developed under the PPP model.
Company officials stated that the latest contract reinforces WABAG’s leadership in the water recycling segment and supports the broader goal of sustainable industrial water management. The project is also expected to contribute to Chennai’s transition towards a circular water economy by increasing the reuse of treated wastewater.
