The Government of India has officially notified the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Amendment Act 2026 following its publication in the Gazette of India on April 6 2026. The legislation received the assent of the President on the same day and introduces key changes to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014.
The amendment provides clarity on the designation of the state capital by explicitly naming Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. This replaces the earlier provision in Section 5 of the 2014 Act, which referred to the creation of a new capital without specifying its name.
According to the provisions outlined in the Gazette notification, the amendment is deemed to have come into force retrospectively from June 2 2024. This backdated implementation aligns the legal framework with administrative decisions regarding the capital city.
Further, the amendment expands the definition of Amaravati by incorporating areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act 2014. This ensures that the capital region includes all designated development zones within the Amaravati area.
The Act was passed by both Houses of Parliament before receiving Presidential approval, completing the legislative process. The notification was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice under the Legislative Department, confirming its enforcement and applicability.
The move is expected to bring legislative clarity to the capital status of Andhra Pradesh and support ongoing administrative and infrastructure planning in the Amaravati region.
