Wolfsburg , Chennai : Volkswagen and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) have officially inked the initial supply agreement pertaining to components of Volkswagen’s MEB for Mahindra’s bespoke electric platform, INGLO, marking a significant advancement in their shared commitment to electric mobility collaboration. This agreement encompasses the provision of specific electric components along with standardized cells. By solidifying this deal, Volkswagen and Mahindra are intensifying their partnership, which commenced with a collaborative agreement and a term sheet in 2022. Both entities will persist in assessing the possibility of broadening their collaboration in the future.
- Mahindra will be the inaugural external partner to embrace Volkswagen’s pioneering unified cell concept, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s battery strategy. The supply agreement is set to span several years with a cumulative volume of approximately 50 GWh over its lifespan.
- Volkswagen Group and Mahindra share the objective of bolstering their presence in the Indian automotive market through e-mobility initiatives and expediting the region’s electrification efforts. Mahindra’s strategy involves the launch of five all-electric SUVs in India, based on its newly developed electric platform, INGLO, starting from December 2024.
- India, boasting over five million new vehicle registrations per year as of 2023, stands as one of the world’s largest automotive markets. The shift towards electrification in the passenger car segment is poised to gain significant traction in the forthcoming years.
- The MEB platform and its components from Volkswagen are utilized by Volkswagen Group’s own brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Å koda, and SEAT/CUPRA, alongside external partners like Ford and Mahindra. The collaboration with Mahindra is overseen by Volkswagen Group Technology, with its “Platform Business” unit, in a closely coordinated effort with Å koda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.
