Ashok Leyland, the flagship of the Hinduja Group and a leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer, has announced that its subsidiary, OHM Global Mobility, has secured an order for 500 ultra-low floor electric buses from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai. This order reinforces Ashok Leyland’s strong presence in the bus market and supports its commitment to sustainable urban transport.
Switch Mobility will supply the EiV12 model buses to OHM, which will operate and maintain them for 12 years. Of the 500 buses, 400 will be non-AC and 100 will have air conditioning, ensuring passenger comfort. Designed to seat 37 passengers and accommodate 24 standing, these buses have a range of over 200 kilometers per charge, making them ideal for Chennai’s routes.
Mr. Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO of Ashok Leyland, highlighted the partnership with MTC as a significant step toward green public transportation. The EiV12 buses feature a 650V electric architecture, are fully wheelchair accessible, and provide high stability for urban maneuverability.
Charging infrastructure will be developed at six key depots in Chennai to ensure efficient operations and consistent service delivery.
