Kolkata , India : Today, Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications service provider in India, has unveiled its groundbreaking initiative to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for metro commuters. The company has deployed high-capacity nodes 35 meters below the river Hooghly.

  • Airtel’s investment in this infrastructure precedes the commercial launch of the service, anticipated to occur soon. With this move, Airtel becomes the first operator to provide seamless connectivity along the 4.8km stretch in Kolkata’s East-West Metro corridor, linking Howrah Maidan with the Esplanade.
  • In order to enable this innovative service, Airtel has established fiber connections along the 4.8-km stretch connecting Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade stations. At each of these stations, high-capacity nodes have been installed to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.
  • This infrastructure allows commuters to experience blazing 5G speeds, seamless voice calls, and efficient data transmission, thereby enhancing their daily commute experience. It enables customers to stay connected and productive during their travel.
  • Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel for West Bengal and Odisha, stated, “Airtel is dedicated to pushing boundaries in order to enhance customer experience. This initiative to offer connectivity through the under-river tunnel will undoubtedly benefit commuters, providing them access to high-definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting platforms, instant photo uploading, and more. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to enjoy the scenic views along the stretch beneath the river Ganga.”

India’s first underwater metro, an engineering marvel connecting Howrah to Kolkata, will soon be opened to the public.
