NHPC Limited has received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for investment in the Kamala Hydroelectric Project with a total outlay of ₹26,069.50 crore. The project, with an installed capacity of 1,720 MW, will be developed in the Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

The hydropower project is designed to significantly enhance India’s renewable energy capacity. It will consist of eight units of 210 MW each and one unit of 40 MW, with an expected annual energy generation of 6,870 million units. The construction timeline for the project has been estimated at 96 months.

The project will be executed through a joint venture between NHPC Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. As part of the financial structure, the Government of India will extend budgetary support of ₹4,743.98 crore to address flood moderation components. In addition, ₹1,340 crore will be allocated for enabling infrastructure such as roads, bridges and associated transmission systems.

Further strengthening the financial framework, the state government will receive central financial assistance of ₹750 crore toward its equity contribution in the project.

The Kamala Hydroelectric Project is expected to play a strategic role in strengthening power supply, supporting grid stability and advancing clean energy goals. It also aims to boost infrastructure development and economic activity in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly in remote regions.
