On September 2, 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved a proposal for the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero-engines for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI aircraft. The order, valued at over Rs 26,000 crore including all taxes and duties, will be fulfilled by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under the Buy (Indian) category. Delivery of these engines is expected to begin in one year and be completed over an eight-year period.

The engines will feature more than 54% indigenous content, thanks to the incorporation of domestically produced components. They will be manufactured at HAL’s Koraput division.

The Su-30 MKI fleet is a crucial and strategically important asset for the IAF. The addition of these aero-engines will support the fleet’s operational continuity and bolster the country’s defense capabilities.
