Ahmedabad, Gujarat : The Board of Directors of Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (GMDC) has endorsed the Land and Resettlement & Rehabilitation (R&R) plan for “Baitarni-West,” one of India’s largest coal mines, situated in Odisha. This approval reflects GMDC’s commitment to balancing industrial development with energy security, recognizing coal as a critical component of India’s energy mix. The decision underscores GMDC’s dedication to expeditiously operationalize the mine, thereby fostering industrial growth in Odisha and enhancing energy security in Gujarat. With a planned Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 15 million tonnes per annum, “Baitarni-West” is poised to become one of the country’s top 20 coal-producing mines, significantly contributing to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

GMDC’s meticulous approach towards operationalizing the mine is evident in its comprehensive plan for land acquisition and R&R activities. The plan demonstrates GMDC’s deep understanding of the socio-economic dynamics of the affected areas, aiming to ensure equitable benefits for local communities. It includes acquiring government and private land totaling approximately 154.3 Ha and 199.86 Ha respectively, along with designing the R&R plan to accommodate 1500 affected families. Key components of the plan encompass a robust compensation and employment framework, designed to foster the long-term financial stability of affected families and landowners.

Furthermore, GMDC has initiated various impactful initiatives in the Angul region, including interventions in the primary health sector through the implementation of the mobile medical unit (MMU) – “Jan Chikitsa Seva,” which provides free medical services at the doorstep for local communities. Additionally, GMDC has allocated land for improved educational facilities and sports complexes, ensured access to safe drinking water, and distributed mobility aids to specially-abled individuals, showcasing its commitment to holistic community development.
