TP Solar Limited, a major cell and module manufacturer and a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, has announced the start of commercial production at its 2 GW solar cell line in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
This facility is India’s largest single-location solar cell and module plant. Following earlier success in module production, this new cell line will help meet increasing demand for high-quality, domestically produced solar components and support India’s clean energy goals. The plant, with a total capacity of 4.3 GW, is expected to reach full production capacity in the next few months, having already produced 1250 MW of solar modules since its module line launched in October 2023.
The new facility uses advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technologies to produce high-efficiency solar cells and modules. With a ₹4,300 crore investment, it supports Tata Power’s leadership in India’s renewable energy sector.
The plant is a key part of Tata Power’s strategy, contributing to its 20% market share in solar energy and aligning with government initiatives like PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The modules are on the ALMM list, and the company expects its cells to be listed soon. The facility will initially supply Tata Power’s projects and aims for broader market reach.
Besides the Tirunelveli plant, Tata Power also runs a high-tech facility in Bengaluru with a capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells. It has produced 3.73 GW of modules and 2.26 GW of cells. Tata Power aims to boost its renewable energy share from 41% to 70% by 2030, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and the global energy transition.
