Airtel and Nokia Join Forces for Sustainable Mobile Networks Through ‘Green 5G’ Initiative

Bharti Airtel and Nokia have launched a transformative partnership focused on “Green 5G,” aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in Airtel’s mobile network. This initiative will leverage advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to improve energy use across Airtel’s 4G/5G Radio Access Network, potentially reducing carbon emissions by around 143,413 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Airtel, highlighted the collaboration’s role in achieving sustainability amidst growing data demands. Key features include a zero-traffic, zero-watt operation to minimize power use during inactivity, integration of energy-saving technologies, and the implementation of advanced digital design tools. Airtel’s broader strategy also focuses on renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure, with significant progress made in solar power and energy sourcing in recent years.
