Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) and SWAN Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 7 at GRSE Bhavan, Kolkata. The agreement outlines a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing India’s indigenous capabilities in commercial shipbuilding.
The MoU sets the groundwork for a non-exclusive partnership between the two companies, focusing on the construction of commercial vessels and offshore structures. The scope of the collaboration includes joint efforts to secure domestic and international shipbuilding projects, with shared use of infrastructure and design resources.
Under this arrangement, GRSE and SWAN Defence will coordinate efforts to develop standard platform designs, streamline construction processes, and explore cost optimization through a shared vendor ecosystem. The partnership also includes initiatives to train and employ a local workforce, contributing to broader skill development in the sector.
In addition to construction, the two companies plan to work together on trials, commissioning, and maintenance of vessels and offshore assets. This integrated approach aims to support the long-term sustainability of commercial shipbuilding activities within the country.
The agreement supports the national goal of promoting self-reliance in the maritime sector under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, and is expected to encourage growth in the domestic shipbuilding supply chain and workforce development.
