Full Article: ITI Limited, India’s first public sector telecom company post-independence, has announced the launch of the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered road safety pilot project in Uttar Pradesh. This initiative, undertaken in partnership with technology firm mLogica, aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities by leveraging AI and Big Data Analytics.

The pilot project will create a scalable analytics platform to collect and process diverse data sources. This includes traffic patterns, environmental conditions, driver behavior, vehicle status, accident records, and infrastructure details at accident-prone locations. The goal is to build a comprehensive system capable of identifying accident hotspots, analyzing root causes, and providing real-time risk assessments.

Among the key outcomes expected from this project are the identification of black spots, real-time prediction of accident risks, and data-backed recommendations for policy and infrastructure enhancements. The system will also simulate various preventive strategies and monitor progress toward road safety goals. These insights will help inform decision-makers and improve public safety through targeted interventions.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved this initiative, with ITI Limited and mLogica authorized to begin immediate work in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government. The six-week prototype phase will integrate accident reports, weather data, telematics, driver history, and roadway attributes to build AI models capable of real-time analysis and dashboard reporting.

Following the trial, the AI system is expected to be deployed across key transport operations in the state. These include faceless licensing, automated revenue collection, e-challan systems, enhanced enforcement tools, and integration with platforms such as Vahan and Sarathi. The long-term aim is to establish a robust, AI-based traffic management model that can be scaled to other regions.

Commenting on the launch, Rajesh Rai, Chairman and Managing Director of ITI Limited, said the company is proud to venture into AI-driven traffic management. He emphasized that the Uttar Pradesh government’s selection of ITI’s model demonstrates growing trust in its capabilities as an ICT solutions provider. He further noted that the analytics-driven platform is expected to significantly reduce accident-related fatalities and could serve as a national benchmark.

In addition to this project, ITI Limited continues to support state governments with their e-governance goals. It is currently executing the Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra (ASSK) project across Maharashtra’s Gram Panchayats. The company recently secured contracts worth ₹88 crore for CCTV surveillance and GIS-based land intelligence management systems in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
