NHPC Limited previously had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Energy, Government of Maharashtra, to develop Energy Storage Systems (Pumped Storage Systems) along with other renewable energy sources (such as solar, wind, or hybrid systems), with a total capacity of 7,350 MW.

The Department of Water Resources (WRD), Government of Maharashtra, has renewed its previous MoU with NHPC Limited on September 3, 2024. This renewed agreement focuses on the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), PSPs combined with Lift Irrigation Schemes (LIS), and co-located PSP-Solar/Other Renewable Energy Hybrid Projects through a Public-Private Partnership. The projects include the Kengadi (1,550 MW), Savitri (2,250 MW), Kalu (1,150 MW), and Jalond (2,400 MW) Pumped Storage Projects in Maharashtra, totaling a capacity of 7,350 MW.
