Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited (KMEW) has announced the acquisition of approximately 15 acres of prime waterfront land at Saphale in Palghar, Maharashtra, with an additional 5-acre expansion option. The acquisition has been executed through its subsidiary, Knowledge Shipyard Private Limited, marking a strategic step in the company’s expansion into shipbuilding infrastructure.
The company stated that the development will support its transition into a technology-driven and sustainable shipbuilding enterprise. This follows its recent entry into the commercial shipbuilding segment and establishes a dedicated platform for scaling maritime operations.
Strategic Location with Marine Advantages
The newly acquired site is located along the Vaitarna River and is in close proximity to the upcoming Vadhvan Port. According to details provided in the press release on page 2 of the document, the site offers key operational advantages, including approximately 188 metres of waterfront access, a natural slipway with around 6 metres of high-tide draft, and sufficient river width to enable efficient vessel movement.
These features are expected to position the facility as a high-efficiency hub for shipbuilding and repair operations.
Development of a Smart and Sustainable Shipyard
KMEW plans to develop the site into a fully integrated and digitally enabled shipyard ecosystem. As outlined on page 3, the facility will include advanced production infrastructure such as hull fabrication units, mechanical and electrical workshops, and streamlined operational workflows.
The company also highlighted sustainability-focused features, including sewage treatment systems, structured waste management, and optimized energy usage. The shipyard will offer end-to-end capabilities covering construction, repair, and lifecycle support for vessels.
Focus on Workforce and Operational Efficiency
The project will incorporate modern administrative and workforce infrastructure, including digitally enabled office spaces, training facilities, and on-site accommodation. The integrated design aims to enhance operational efficiency while supporting workforce development.
Alignment with India’s Maritime Growth Policies
KMEW stated that the project aligns with key government initiatives such as the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy, Green Tug Transition Programme, and Maritime India Vision 2030. These initiatives are expected to drive growth in India’s shipbuilding sector and increase demand for domestic maritime capabilities.
Phased Expansion Strategy
The company plans to execute the project in multiple phases, beginning with the development of specialised vessels such as workboats and tugs, followed by repair facilities and floating dry docks, and eventually scaling up to large vessel manufacturing.
The management indicated that the shipyard is intended to serve as a long-term infrastructure investment, contributing to India’s maritime ecosystem and supporting sustainable and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
