Balu Forge Industries Ltd (BFIL) has received a multi-month contract for the supply of 155mm Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) ammunition shells, including Base Bleed (BB) and Boat Tail (BT) variants, following the successful execution of its initial purchase order.

The company said the contract marks the commercialisation of its 155mm ERFB BB and BT shells after completing the first purchase order from an Indian ammunition player. The development expands Balu Forge Industries’ presence in the defence ammunition segment and adds to its portfolio of large-calibre artillery products.

Initial Supply of 10,000 Units

Under the contract, the pilot supply will comprise 10,000 units. Following the pilot phase, monthly supplies will be made in mutually agreed quantities between the company and the customer.

Balu Forge Industries said the successful execution of the initial order demonstrates its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in producing advanced ammunition variants. The company is among the private-sector entities in India to commercialise these ERFB ammunition variants.

155mm ERFB Ammunition and Extended-Range Capability

The 155mm ERFB BB and BT shells are used in large-calibre artillery systems. The company said the ammunition variants are designed to provide extended range and precision capabilities.

Base Bleed technology is intended to reduce aerodynamic drag during flight, supporting longer-range projectile performance. The company noted that the 155mm calibre is undergoing increased adoption globally as armed forces seek greater stand-off range and precision in artillery systems.

According to Balu Forge Industries, the ERFB ammunition is compatible with various 155mm artillery platforms and is intended for applications involving extended-range artillery operations.

Balu Forge Industries’ Defence Expansion Strategy

The new contract forms part of Balu Forge Industries’ broader strategy to expand its presence in defence manufacturing and move into higher-value ammunition products.

The company has been developing capabilities for the production of artillery ammunition, including 152mm and 155mm variants. It has also been expanding its manufacturing infrastructure and automation capabilities to support defence-sector requirements.

Balu Forge Industries said its manufacturing capabilities include production of standard 152mm and 155mm M107 projectiles and that it is progressing towards additional ammunition variants.

Focus on Next-Generation Artillery Systems

The company said the commercialisation of the 155mm ERFB BB and BT shells is part of its efforts to expand its product portfolio in large-calibre ammunition.

With the multi-month contract, Balu Forge Industries is expected to scale supplies following the initial 10,000-unit pilot order. The company is also targeting further opportunities in defence manufacturing and ammunition as it expands its capabilities across artillery and other military applications.

The contract strengthens Balu Forge Industries’ position in the domestic defence manufacturing segment, while the company continues to develop products aimed at meeting requirements for extended-range and precision artillery systems.
