Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited (KMEW) has announced the receipt of a new work order worth ₹384.33 crore from the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA). The contract covers the manning, operation, maintenance and complete technical management of one contractor-owned ASTDS-GTTP Green Tug over a 15-year period.
This marks the company’s second major long-term order for a next-generation electric Green Tug, further strengthening its position in India’s growing clean-energy marine operations segment. The tug, equipped with a 60-ton bollard pull capacity and a battery-powered zero-emission propulsion system, is compliant with the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP).
KMEW stated that the order reinforces the confidence placed by port authorities in its technical expertise, operational capability, and performance track record. The company already manages its first green tug and will replicate its established high-efficiency energy management architecture in this new project.
The award aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals under the ₹10,000-crore GTTP initiative, which aims to replace diesel-powered harbour tugs with electric and alternative-fuel vessels. The program is a key pillar of the Maritime India Vision 2030, targeting emission reduction, renewable energy adoption and greener port operations across major Indian ports.
KMEW highlighted that handling two green tug projects in parallel will generate significant cost and operational synergies, including economies of scale in procurement, standardized engineering workflows, and optimized project-management cycles. The company expects these efficiencies to enhance project economics and accelerate future deployment of similar vessels.
With this win, KMEW strengthens its position as a competitive participant in India’s emerging market for decarbonized port and coastal vessels, estimated at around ₹12,000 crore.
