Tata Power Renewable Energy Secures First-Ever 120 MWh Battery Storage Agreement from NHPC for Kerala’s Power Grid Modernization

Quick Summary:  Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has signed its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with NHPC Limited to deploy a 120 MWh system in Kerala for the Kerala State Electricity Board. The project will support grid stability and the state’s renewable integration goals.

Full Article: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has secured its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) from NHPC Limited. The agreement is part of a broader initiative to enhance grid reliability and support renewable energy integration in Kerala.

The contract involves developing a 30 MW / 120 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the 220 kV substation in Kerala. The project was awarded through NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I tender under a competitive bidding process for the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEB), which will be the end-user of the system.

The project aims to bolster grid flexibility, address peak demand challenges, and facilitate the efficient incorporation of renewable energy into Kerala’s power grid. It forms part of NHPC’s plan to develop 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage in the state under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding mechanism supported by Viability Gap Funding.

The project will operate under a 12-year BESPA, in line with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Power, and is scheduled to be commissioned within 15 months.

This agreement also aligns with the Government of India’s national goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, with storage seen as a key enabler of round-the-clock renewable power supply and grid stability.

TPREL is already operating a combined 100 MW solar and 120 MWh BESS project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, developed under an EPC contract from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI).

The NHPC project marks TPREL’s first standalone BESS project win, reinforcing its position in the emerging battery storage sector. With this new addition, TPREL’s total renewable energy portfolio has reached approximately 10.9 GW, comprising 5.6 GW in operation (including 4.6 GW solar and 1 GW wind) and 5.3 GW under development.
