Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has made significant strides in its commitment to the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative, achieving up to 92% localization in manufacturing through a dedicated indigenization roadmap. HMIL’s Localization Team works closely with over 194 vendors to source more than 1,238 parts, resulting in forex savings of over USD 672 million (INR 5,678 Crore+) since 2019.
A key milestone in these efforts is the local assembly of battery packs at a state-of-the-art facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which has a Phase 1 annual capacity of 75,000 units. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is the first model to be equipped with locally assembled battery packs from this plant.
HMIL’s localization efforts have not only optimized manufacturing but have also created over 1,400 direct employment opportunities. The company’s commitment to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ is evident in its strategic localization, which includes the successful localization of high-tech components such as the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), panoramic sunroof, and NOX sensors. Looking ahead, HMIL plans to deepen its localization efforts further, including at its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra.
