Balu Forge Industries Limited has announced the receipt of a significant order in the defence sector, securing an initial contract to supply 30,000 units of 152 mm artillery shells to a major Indian energetics company. The development marks a notable expansion of the company’s presence in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and supports its ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous production capabilities.
According to the company, deliveries under the contract are scheduled to begin in June 2026. The order is expected to serve as the foundation for a broader long-term partnership, with projected volumes potentially increasing to more than 100,000 artillery shells as additional ammunition variants are introduced in the future.
Production to Be Driven by Automated Indigenous Facility
The contract will be executed through Balu Forge’s fully automated empty shell production line located at its greenfield manufacturing facility in Belgaum, Karnataka. The company stated that the production system has been built indigenously and utilizes advanced robotics and unmanned forging technology to improve manufacturing precision, efficiency, and scalability.
To address rising demand from domestic and international markets for large-calibre ammunition, Balu Forge is also expanding the production capacity of the facility. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat program aimed at enhancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Strategic Expansion into Advanced Energetics
As part of its long-term defence strategy, Balu Forge is pursuing forward integration through its subsidiary, Quantum Energetics. The company plans to expand beyond the production of precision-engineered empty shell bodies and participate in advanced energetics, ammunition development, and filling technologies.
Management indicated that this move is intended to strengthen the company’s position across the defence value chain and enable it to offer more comprehensive solutions to defence customers.
Focus on Domestic and International Defence Markets
Balu Forge also highlighted its NATO certification and long-term memorandum of understanding, which it said enhances its ability to supply mission-critical defence components to NATO member countries. The certification supports the company’s ambitions to expand its international defence business while continuing to serve the growing domestic market.
Commenting on the development, the company’s management stated that the artillery shell order represents an important milestone in its defence manufacturing journey and reflects confidence in its precision engineering capabilities, automated production infrastructure, and long-term strategy focused on defence self-reliance and global market expansion.
