Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms Inc. to develop an AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The project marks Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre in India and highlights the growing importance of the country in the global artificial intelligence infrastructure landscape.
Under the agreement, Reliance will develop a data centre with an initial capacity of 168 MW, which is expected to be delivered within two years. The project also includes provisions for future capacity expansion to meet increasing demand for AI computing resources.
According to the company, the facility will support Meta’s global AI infrastructure requirements, enabling the technology company to scale its artificial intelligence operations while strengthening its long-term investment commitment in India.
Reliance stated that it will provide comprehensive end-to-end services throughout the lifecycle of the project. These services will include the design and construction of the facility, utility management, renewable energy supply, network connectivity, and fully managed operations. The company said this integrated approach positions it as a single-window solutions provider for hyperscale AI infrastructure projects.
The Jamnagar location was selected due to its strategic advantages for large-scale data centre operations. These include access to renewable energy resources, water availability, proximity to India’s western submarine cable landing stations, and connectivity through Jio’s extensive fibre network.
The companies said the facility will operate using renewable energy sources and desalinated seawater cooling systems, reflecting their focus on sustainability and environmentally responsible infrastructure development.
Commenting on the partnership, Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, said the collaboration with Meta represents a significant development for India’s digital infrastructure sector. He noted that the project demonstrates India’s readiness to support global AI innovation and positions Jamnagar as a destination for hyperscale AI computing infrastructure.
Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Meta, said the partnership with Reliance will support the company’s efforts to build its first AI-enabled data centre in India. He added that the facility will help Meta expand its global AI infrastructure capabilities while reinforcing its long-term investment strategy in the Indian market.
The partnership aligns with the Government of India’s focus on strengthening digital infrastructure and attracting investments in artificial intelligence technologies. Industry observers view the project as another step in India’s emergence as a major hub for global data centre investments driven by increasing AI adoption.
